The main purpose of periodontal treatment is to heal the damage in the hard and soft tissues surrounding the teeth and to stop and correct the destruction that has occurred.
Healthy gums are pale pink in color, do not bleed spontaneously or with brushing, tightly surround the teeth, and have an orange peel appearance.
Unhealthy gums are gums that bleed during brushing or on their own, are red, swollen and irregular in appearance, hurt when pressed and/or pus leaks, and leave a bad smell and taste in the mouth.
As a part of human life, dental plaque accumulates on the surfaces of teeth, between them, and in the areas where teeth and gums meet. This plaque layer should be removed daily with a toothbrush and dental floss, and the area should be cleaned. If the plaque layer is not removed, harmful bacteria begin to grow on it and multiply over time. The toxins produced by these bacteria cause inflammation and bleeding in the gums. In later stages, it causes the surrounding bone tissue surrounding the teeth to melt. On the other hand, dental plaque that accumulates and multiplies hardens over time and turns into tartar.
Gum diseases are generally inflammatory diseases that affect the gums and other tissues that support the teeth.
The first and most important finding in patients with gingivitis is bleeding gums. Bleeding is often accompanied by red and swollen gums that have increased in volume. In this early stage of gum disease, patients may not feel much discomfort. However, if left untreated, the inflammation in the gums goes deeper and progresses to the bone tissue surrounding the teeth. Due to osteoporosis, the teeth gradually become loose and displaced, the gums recede, and sensitivity begins in the teeth.
This advanced stage of gum disease is called 'periodontitis'. Exceptionally, in individuals who smoke, gum bleeding occurs much less due to nicotine reducing vascularity, which can mask the disease and prevent it from being noticed.
Although the main cause is dental plaque formed on the teeth, smoking, periods of hormonal changes such as pregnancy, systemic diseases such as diabetes and hereditary factors are also among the factors that cause gum disease or accelerate its destruction.
The main purpose of this treatment is to heal the damage in the hard and soft tissue surrounding the teeth and to stop and correct the destruction that has occurred. Therefore, the first stage of treatment is to remove the microbial dental plaque and tartar, which are also the cause of the disease.
Initial treatment alone is sufficient for patients who are still at the beginning of the disease. After this procedure, which is applied with special vibrating tools, your doctor will inform you about choosing a brush, dental floss, interdental brush and toothpaste, and will explain correct and sufficient tooth brushing.
In more severe gum infections, the initial treatment is only the first step of the treatment. In order to treat the gaps (pockets) that have formed due to the erosion of the jaw bones between the tooth and gum and the osteoporosis, the gum is first lifted, the inflamed tissues are cleaned, the bone surface is smoothed, and if new bone formation is aimed, the operation is completed using biomaterials such as bone powder. These procedures, which are performed under local anesthesia, are called “periodontal surgery”.
After the simple and advanced gum treatment is completed, the gum enlargements are reduced to their original size with laser application painlessly, without bleeding, and without stitches. If there is gum recession, it is corrected with more advanced periodontal procedures.
After the treatment is completed, maintenance treatment is started. In maintenance treatment, the course of the disease is monitored by creating control appointments with a set duration (3-6-12 months) according to the severity of the disease and the risk factors the patient carries. At each control, the patient's oral hygiene is re-evaluated and deficiencies are corrected. The success of gum treatments directly depends on the extent to which the patient can maintain oral hygiene, and their compliance and motivation with the treatment.
