When it comes to rehabilitation for patients with missing teeth, dental implants are the gold standard.
Dental implants are small screws that are placed in the mouth to replace missing teeth and act as tooth roots. They are made of titanium and their success rate is quite high due to titanium's high compatibility with body tissues.
In order for dental implants to be applied, the individual must have completed their growth and development. This corresponds to an average age of 16-18.There is no upper age limit. However, the individual must be systemically healthy. The operation is not recommended for people with uncontrolled systemic diseases and for patients who have recently received radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In addition, smoking poses a risk to the health of dental implants.
Implants, which have a wide range of uses from patients with a single tooth missing to patients with no teeth in the mouth, are the best alternative that can replace natural teeth. In cases of complete tooth loss, they can be used as a method to increase the retention of dentures if patients complain that removable dentures move frequently, while at the same time allowing the production of fixed dentures instead of removable dentures in the mouth.
Especially when a bridge system is applied in cases where there are 1-2 missing teeth, the front and back teeth must be cut (reduced). With implant application, only the teeth in the missing tooth area are completed without any operation on the neighboring teeth. Today, dental implant application is accepted as the gold standard for patients with missing teeth.
After the systemic condition of the patient who has decided to have implants is evaluated, an intraoral examination and radiological evaluation are performed.Since dental implants are screws placed into the jawbone, the width and height of the existing bone are important. After the dimensions of the bone are measured in millimeters on radiographs, the diameter and length of the implant to be made are decided. Afterwards, the patient is prepared for the operation in a sterile environment and the procedure is performed under local anesthesia. The patient does not feel any pain during the operation. The implants are placed by opening holes suitable for the dimensions of the implant into the bone and the operation is completed by suturing.
The operation takes an average of 5-6 minutes to make each implant. Implant application should be performed by Oral, Dental and Jaw Surgery specialists. At the end of the 1 week-10 day healing process, stitches are removed. In case of dissolvable stitches, there is no need to remove them. After operations that are performed quickly and correctly, mild pain and swelling that can be controlled with painkillers may occur. Pain and swelling are considered normal and should not be forgotten that they are part of the healing process.
Following the operational application of dental implants, except for the all-on-four system or immediate loading protocols, an average of 3 months is required for the implant to osseointegrate with the bone (fusion). When the osseointegration process is completed, porcelain veneers are applied. Bone grafts are used in patients whose existing bone amount is not suitable for implant construction, and the waiting period in these patients can be extended up to 6 months. In the all-on-four system or immediate loading protocols, teeth are attached within 48 hours at the latest following the implant operation.
Implant treatment fees vary depending on the brand of the implant applied. Situations such as which implant systems should be applied according to your current oral condition and how many implants can be applied are determined individually during the examination according to the person's condition.
